Rape is not a Rght Link |
Separating right from wrong.
It is disappointing to know that media has an influence in sexual abuse. It makes it seem alright to engage in abusive activities and the youth sees the indirect influence to practice what the media warns the society about. A 12 year old girl who was gang-raped by seven young males, in Soweto, filmed it and circulated it. A video was covered in news reports around the world on Wednesday, including by CNN, the LA Times, the BBC, CBC and AFP among others.
From a Public Relations point of view I feel media is starting to expose things which have a negative effect. Yet the main purpose is to inform people of the activities which occur around us. Why take a disturbing video and distribute it to others. The sad part is the media journalists wanted to see the video and broadcast it on National television. This is like watching yourself being stabbed.
These minors are supposed to be at school gaining knowledge instead of taking place in such unbearable activities. Organisations such as Ithemba Rape Crisis Centre have volunteered to assist the family and the child for concealing. The incident has not only affected the family but the institute which the victim attended.
Now one needs to question: what about the department of education? Its life skills programme does not contain information about violence against women, gender equality, or sexual and reproductive health rights. In fact, there is no national life skills programme manual or course. The departments need to begin educating students on sexual issues, such as “Rape is not right”
The department of communication in South African must have information about our rights put up on every billboard spot available billboards that say "Real men don't rape" This needs to be improved through partnerships with those on the ground that are supporting survivors, engaging in prevention programmes, and informing people of their rights. Without this, I anticipate that we might be spending many more days with headlines like these.
We learn social norms and myths from those around us, our peers, teachers and pastors. Media also a big role in shaping norms.

rape is not right and the journalist must not be insensitive when they deal about issues like rape, however the journalists are doing their jod which is to bring new to society and ensure that people are informed and alerted about such insidences because if these issues are not exposed through the media these rapist's or crime dowers will not be exposed
ReplyDeleteSensitive issues should not be exposed in public like that, but there are some ways of telling the truth without being insensitive to human feelings. The media must make sure that their message has a positive effect and its audience understands the message.
DeleteThis story was very sad to hear indeed it is also a sad fact that they are seeing these things from our media and taking it there own way, even though the media is trying to teach us about what is happening around the world the youth today seems to think it is ok especially with the american movies that is shown. The truth is you cannot really stop or change what these young people watch but we can try and change their perceptions and mindset for the better but how would you suggest we can contribute to help make this change?
ReplyDeleteAs an individual you must begin to to be the change you want to see around you.For instant, do not entertain things that will havve a bad impact on you.Start by not entertaining the bad things you see on media.
DeleteNokuthula thanks for touching base on this very serious issue which I personaly feel that the media is playing a huge role in these cases because of some of the programs televised make it look cool for kids to do such develish things and to the print media,I now know where they priorities lie and they lie on making money and selling news regardless of the situation of those involved and as for those pervets they can rot in hell for all I care because they dont deserve to live with humans.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree with you.We must not forget that media informs us of the world we live in.Yet they are insensitive on how they address the issue to the public. As an individual we must begin to be aware of what we get used to in media.e.g watching action and violance movies. This tells the young ones that it is ok to practice that in our society.
DeleteRape continues to make headlines in our newspapers, I think it will continue to be the case if the root of the problem is not identified. Our government needs to find out what causes people to resort to raping our mothers and sisters - if that is not addressed, then headlines will continue!
ReplyDeleteThis is becoming a trend,to rape then take a video to show others. Some people have a perception that by doing this they will send their videos to the media and be paid for it.The media must teach our society that it is there to inform, educate and entertain without coursing harm on anyone.
Deletethe problem is within the media, as now we are exposed to everything and the media does not follow its ethics.
Delete@VINCENT Media is not wrong to showcase cases about rape, this give all people out the to see their fellow friends that if they do continue do this they will face hands of justice. in terms of video is wrong, but is truth that journalists asked for the video to publish?
ReplyDeleteyes Mr Trot Khoza, the journalists view to see the video. The media has power to influence. The youth must learn to choose what they learn or let the media influence them on.
DeleteI have to disagree, the media conveys the reality behind sex, and also educates people about its implications and consequences. Media does not say that people must rape, or become addicted to drugs or whats so ever. What should be done now, is that the media lauch many campaigns as far as possible that can make rapists to think again as well as the government must establish laws that can stop the corruption and make sure that strict laws are enforced... coming back to the girl's story, the media was wrong to publish the video, they did not follow the code of conducts of the media practice
ReplyDeleteYes I agree, but media also has its indirect influence.People do not understand the message the same way.
DeletePeople will contiue on raping young girls up until the government decides to bring back the death sentence, that is when these peolpe will stop being cruel to others
ReplyDeleteyes that is true. The is another inccident that happened yestaday.A 15 year old girl was raped beaten up and took out her eyes,by seven boys in Kwa Zulu-Natal. This indicates that media educates people to continue being cruel on other human beings.Media makes the sexcual course to be a trend.
Deletetrue that rape is not a right it is so sad see that our SA brothers can do such a painfull thing to their fellow sister, these boys should be arrested.
ReplyDeletejustice should be done.
DeleteMore education on such issues should be addressed.
it is very sad that there are heartless human being out there.
ReplyDeleteJustice should be done.
DeleteIs this what it takes to shake the government? Did they have to wait for yet another woman/child abuse case to wake up and realise how cruel people can be out there? As for the video; I do not appreciate how the media and South African citizens can be amused by such! Especially because the girl in the video lost her dignity and security after this, I am trully disappointed by this country!
ReplyDeleteThe media does not practice its ethics.Im am also disappointed in this.
